@4fc97bb6eb116e4797c4817535fd7405:disqus - Thanks for the comment. You raise some really interesting points. And I agree 100% with your proposition that lawyers need to change with the times or face extinction. I've said on many occasions that lawyers need to innovate or die. It sounds a bit over the top, but I do think it's true.
And, the irony of that phrase at the end of my Star Trek quote wasn't lost on me, given that the quote is intended to support my claim that certain aspects of lawyering can't be replaced by machines. And yet I also agree wholeheartedly that lawyers need to utilize technology effectively or face the consequences. So, I suppose that the quote, overall, incorporates my thoughts on the issue of lawyers and emerging technology, although one could argue that the last phrase contradicts my point in the post. In fact, I almost considered leaving it off, but decided that would be disingenuous;)

In any event, thanks again for the interesting comment!

The desire to stay alive, is I feel absolutely core to this discussion. At it's heart the automation v. manual practice debate is really about how to improve the practice of law while removing the conflicting interests of maximized billing vs. efficiency. In considering automation the area of law is probably the single most important determining factor. For example, Immigration law, Employment law, Discovery review/coding, IP, and form agreements all have high potential yields. Other areas such as M&A and litigation could benefit but likely in a smaller capacity due to the unique nature of each matter. Thus the conversation there needs to revolve more around bettering the management of these matters than automating them.

So how does this relate to the desire to survive? Well let's face it, not everyone is equal in either the strength of their survival instincts or their ability to execute on them. Lawyers are no different. The savvy, hungry lawyer will recognize the potential that automating certain types of matters/processes has to increase billing by allowing them to focus in on the highest value parts of a matter. These are the places where the body of their professional experience offers the chance to differentiate themselves from others competing for the same business. It defies both experience and logic to maintain that all parts of a matter require the same level of involvement from an attorney.

At the same time, attorney's who stubbornly refuse to take advantage of the opportunities offered by automation technologies run the same risk as any other living creature who ceases to evolve.

Chad--the more you interact with Zite, the better it works in terms of serving up content that you like. So if you've got the time, give a post a thumbs up or down and when you're in a post, you can click on subjects or sources that you want to see more often in your feed. Also, sharing on your social networks is perceived by Zite as an indication that a particular post/topic/source is of interest. So, bottom line, the more you interact with it, the more data it has about your likes and the more relevant content you should see.

Hope that helps and glad to hear you like the app and this post!

Thanks for great post Niki! I have been using Zite for about two weeks. I checked out Flipboard, Zite and Pulse and chose Zite mostly based on the feature that it learns what I like and shows me more news like that. Since I am still a novice, any new-user tips? Best, Chad

Jim--you raise a great point. Technology does reduce processes and the time spent on more routine legal tasks. This, in turn, will reduce the number of lawyers--which some might say isn't necessarily a bad thing!

I agree with your conclusion, that not every aspect of legal work can be automated; however technology and alternative resources will greatly the _number_ of lawyers it takes to deliver the same service - that's the key point.
